Wollongong Whirlwind
Helen Scholes
Wight Tri’s Helen Scholes took on the World Triathlon Age-Group Sprint-Distance Championships in Wollongong, Australia—one of the most well-organised, friendly events she’s ever raced. The compact course meant constant crowd support, and the atmosphere? Absolutely buzzing.
The swim was a chaotic “M” shape in the harbour—less Michael Phelps, more aquatic mosh pit. Helen got dunked, swum over and mildly mauled at the buoys, but emerged triumphant and transitioned like a ninja.
Then on to the bike leg - two laps of zigzags, punchy climbs and fast flats. One “no passing zone” added drama, but Helen held her line and her nerve.
The run circled the lighthouse three times, each lap featuring a hill that felt personally offended by her presence. She puffed up, stretched out down and cruised through the finish to well-earned cheers (and welcomed hose spray!).
Final time: 1:24:36. 25th of 56 overall, 2nd of 5 GB athletes and just behind an ex-Olympic silver medallist -No pressure.
Best moment? Her daughter flying in overnight and jumping out as she set up her transition area to surprise her!
Next up: winter training and going up to the 60–64 age group (surely not?!!) But first, she’s off to watch the para triathletes and the pros tear up the T100. Wollongong, you were wild. Helen, you were wonderful. And the swim? Still not sure what shape that was.
